don’t keep makeup too long…
EVERY woman i know has a pile of makeup in her drawer or hand bag that she “sometimes” uses or never uses but keeps just in case she finally needs to use it one day…
however, what we do not know is that beauty products do have an “expiry date” and chances are that blue eyeshadow with the glimmery bits that you bought a couple of years ago may have long expired!!!
here’s a quick guide on the list of makeup products and their life spand…
- concealer up to 12 months
- powder up to 2 years
- eye liner should be sharpened regularly and it will last up to 3 years
- eyeshadow will also last up to 3 years
- brushes are to be cleaned every 2-3 months
- sponges are to be washed weekly and discard monthly
- water-based foundation will last up to 12 months
- oil-based will last up to 18 months
FOR YOUR INFORMATION
you may find you need two different shades of foundation each year…
when your skin is naturally darker and when you’re lighter… if your water-based foundation dries out before its expiry date, simply add a few drops of alcohol-free toner and shake to get rid of clumps… no need to do this to oil-based foundations because they contain oil, they will tend to separate… you have to shake anyway!!
- lip liner lasts up to 3 years
- lipstick lasts up to 4 years, but if it smells rancid, throw it out, it’s spoiled… if you store lipstick in the refrigerator, it will last longer
- mascara expires the fastest throw out after 3 months… if you don’t want your mascara to expire faster than its fresh date, don’t pump the wand in and out, you’re only exposing the product to drying air…
- nail polish can last up to 12 months, depending on the quality and how many times you apply it… may powder up to two years…
now…
a simple task which will ONLY take you 10 mins…
go through ALL your makeup and THROW away those OLD ones…
cosmetic caution - do not keep makeup too long!!!
bacteria grows in products…
“HOUSTON — Every year, women spend $45 billion on cosmetic and skin care products — all in an attempt to put their best face forward.
But those same products, if you’re not careful, can cause serious skin problems or worse.
“I still have the lipstick from when I got married 13 years ago,” said Sabrina Kurzman, an actress and model.
Kurzman never thought that aging products could be the source of her skin problems.
“I never attributed it to makeup. I attributed it stress — the kids, the husband — anything but the makeup,” Kurzman said.
Fungus and mold can grow in products, which can cause serious problems, according to experts.
So when should makeup be thrown out?
Paula Begoun, a cosmetic industry expert, said products used around the eye area have the shortest longevity. Mascara should be thrown out within three months of opening it. Also, you should never pump it or mix it with water since both things increase bacteria, according to Begoun.
Liquid eyeliners and concealers should be kept for no more than six months.
Eye and lip pencils can last up to a year, if sharpened regularly to prevent bacteria build-up.
Begoun said that swabbing some alcohol over the tip could disinfect them.
Lipsticks and lip glosses should be thrown out after a year.
Liquid and cream foundations should be used within three to six months, Begoun said. However, some may last longer.
Powder-based products can last up to two years.
Experts suggest that women keep track of makeup by dating it before it’s used.
When in doubt about its age, throw it out. That’s the safest way to make sure your beauty products keep you looking beautiful, Begoun said.”
